Responsible Degree of Action for New Zealand

New Zealand’s ecological footprint per capita is now ranked sixth largest in the world according WWF’s Living Planet Report released today, 29 October 2008.

We increased our footprint from 5.9 global hectares per person in 2006 to an average of 7.7 in 2008.

We are able to live within our national footprint only by virtue of our relatively low population.

Notes

An ecological footprint is a measure of the amount of land that is required to provide resources for and remove waste. It can be applied to an individual, a community, city, state or the world. In total we need to live within our ecological footprint. Currently we exceed it globally by 30%.
