Regional Spatial Plan

Goal 6 of the Auckland Sustainability Framework is to ensure Auckland has a quality Compact Urban Form.

The Regional Growth Strategy aims to:

  • Contain urban spread
  • Base growth around
        • Public Transport and
        • Centres
  • Intensify urban densities
  • Allow some limited expansion outside the Metropolitan Urban Limits (MUL)

Containing urban spread has many social, environmental and economic benefits. It allows for amenities to be located closer to where people live, a more contained and therefore affordable transport system to be developed and provides for businesses to cluster closer to where people live, reducing travelling time and costs.
