Demographic Profile

Many Pacific islanders came to New Zealand throughout the 1950s and 1960s to settle and work in the growing agricultural and industrial sector in Auckland, such as those situated in Mangere.

Currently, the majority of the Pacific peoples residing in Mangere are from Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tokelau, Niue, Fiji and Tuvalu.  However, the broader Pacific communities residing in Mangere are also made up of people from Melanesian countries such as Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, as well as people from Kiribati and other Micronesian nations (Census report, 2006).

Until the mid 1940’s Mangere was a largely market garden and farming area. There is also a huge number of Asian residents in Mangere, the majority of whom are Chinese.  From 1915 and onwards, Chinese market gardeners began leasing and purchasing lands in the Mangere area.  By the early 50s, the majority of the market gardeners registered in the Onehunga-Mangere areas were Chinese.  Auckland’s first Chinese Community Centre was opened in 1978 along Taylor Road in Mangere Bridge (Census data, 2006).
