• City and regional Councils have many responsibilities in providing critical infrastructure in cities, towns and communities, and they need to plan for and manage all their infrastructure assets

• These include securing water sources for municipal supply, treatment  of that water and then its reticulation to homes and businesses

• They also provide infrastructure for stormwater collection, reticulation and disposal and  wastewater collection, reticulation, treatment and disposal; and waste disposal, including running landfills

• They are also roading authorities – responsible for all roads other than state highways.  Also need to remember all the infrastructure that is located in roads and attached to bridges – power, gas, telecommunications

• Also provide social infrastructure, such as recreation centres, parks, libraries
  
• Some of this infrastructure will be at risk from climate change, particularly infrastructure  located in quite vulnerable locations – coastal edges, river banks, flood plains – Waikato drought intake and outfall structures mixing zones

• Many councils are looking for efficiencies and innovation in the way they provide and manage infrastructure and these can have multiple benefits including climate change adaptation – e.g. integration of the urban "three waters" - waste, drinking water and stormwater, and the adoption of green technologies.
