Historical Centres - 'Beads on a String'

Terminology:

Centre

Notes

Historical growth and settlement patterns of south Auckland reflected the distinctive geography and natural features, early military planning and the important influence of the major transportation routes and facilities.

The original 'Town Centres' grew like beads on a string, on harbours and coasts, along old tram routes, or following major infrastructure lines (water, waste water and electricity).
A prime example is the main north-south transport corridor, initially the Great South Road and the Main Trunk Railway Line.  The key structure of this sort of development is linear, with nodes developing around important crossroads.
