Energy Use in Manukau by End-Use

Energy Use in Manukau by End-Use

Numbers = petajoules per year, (not percentages)

Notes

The sector with the most potential for improvement is the transport sector (currently 64% of the district’s total emissions).

Currently the vast majority of Manukau’s mobility is achieved by vehicles running with low occupancy (e.g. 1 to 3 occupants per vehicle) running on petroleum products (diesel and petrol).

With some minor changes to distribution systems and vehicles, it is possible to substitute the fuels that could be produced indigenously e.g. ethanol, compressed natural gas, bio-gas, bio-diesel or electricity (if generated locally).

Possibly the most effective means of increasing Manukau’s economic resilience and reducing the GHG emissions associated with transport is to reduce demand e.g. increased walking / cycling pathways, increased public transport and improved urban form.
