Climate Change Scenarios - Extremes

 

Extremes - key part of climate change:

    • Changes in mean conditions imply altered frequency of extremes.


    Key climatic extremes:

      • extreme temperatures (hot days ↑, heat wave ↑, frost ↓)

       

      • heavy precipitation and flood risk  ↑

      • drought risk in eastern/northern regions ↑

      • less certain changes are: storm surge, storms, extra tropical cyclones

      The average changes may not seem large but the extreme events will increase in occurrence and magnitude. We know that there will be an overall increase in temperature, more floods, more droughts in some areas and the likelihood of more tropical cyclones.
